| FTP stands for
file transfer protocol. It means you can send large files
across the internet to a server. The Music Technology Program owns it's own domain and has it's own server at www.foothillmusictech.com. That's where assignments are turned in from your computer, and you can download files you need from our server to your home computer. This page comes from there as well.
You need an FTP Client and a broadband internet connection to use the Music Technology server. You can get a free FTP client by going to http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ (for mac) or http://www.versiontracker.com/windows/ (for windows). There are even links for Vista and Leopard if what you are using is acting up. Remember, "shareware" almost always has a small fee required for complete functionality, "commercial" is a full featured commercial client with customer support, help, etc. "Freeware" is free, but there's no help or customer support. FTP is really simple, though - any client will do. The easiest FTP client is FireFTP, a plug in for the browser Firefox. Firefox is the best browser out there, you can download it free from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. Once it's installed, FireFTP is a free plug In you down load at addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684 - special thanks to student Derek Crawford for this tip!
You can purchase a full featured Mac FTP client from Captain FTP and get a discount - Captain FTP is a Partner In Education with the Music Technology Program. You can get Captain FTP basic with a $10 discount using Discount Coupon 47a064982f429 at checkout (normally, it's $25).
